A goat has been mayor of this remote Texas town since the 1980s

Every day since the mid-1980s, the mayor of Lajitas has held court on the side of dusty Farm to Market Road 170, just outside Big Bend National Park in remote West Texas.

The “mayor” of Lajitas, Texas lives in a pen off FM 170, near the elite Lajitas Golf Resort.

An unassuming pen next to the town’s general store is home of ‘The World Famous Clay Henry Mayor Mayor of Lajitas.”

The title of “mayor” is more of an honor, as the community of 75 residents in rural Brewster County is unincorporated. But the four-legged incumbent seems to win every “election.”

A sign announces the unassuming home of the “Mayor of Lajitas.”

Now taxidermied, Clay Henry I is on display at the nearby Terlingua Trading Post.

Legend has it that the original goat had a thirst for beer. But it seems visitors today still try to carry on the tradition. On our visit in July 2020, we found several empty Lone Star longnecks next to the enclosure.
