WATCH: Zion National Park, a wondrous sanctuary in southwest Utah

Utah’s first national park, Zion, is home to massive sandstone canyon cliffs, majestic mountains, dramatic waterfalls, the winding Virgin River, Emerald Pools, a hanging garden, and natural arches.

As explorer John Wesley Powell remarked in 1895, “All of this is the music of waters.” The same water that carved Zion’s distinct canyons are also the lifeblood of a unique ecosystem, a haven of habitats and geologic contrasts along the Colorado Plateau.

Meaning “the promised land,” Zion was established as a national park in 1919, though the surrounding area has been inhabited for thousands of years.
