For Hollywood star Sean Astin, mental health advocacy is personal

Really impressed by actor Sean Astin! Got to spend some time with him Friday while serving as master of ceremonies for Mosaic Counseling Centers of East Texas’ ‘Peace of Mind’ Luncheon.

From the adventurous Mikey Walsh in ‘The Goonies’ to the determined Rudy and the steadfast Samwise Gamgee in the epic ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, and even the endearing Bob Newby in ‘Stranger Things 2,’ Sean has consistently touched hearts with his performances. But there’s more to Sean than his impressive acting repertoire. He is the son of accomplished actors John Astin and Patty Duke, and like his mother, he has embraced a vital role as a mental health advocate.

We spent time backstage talking about his life, travels, and his high-level role in the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike in Hollywood. A refreshingly affable and unassuming guy!

He’s using his stature to share an unfiltered glimpse at his family’s journey with mental health issues to help break the stigma.
