A rising voice in the Christian worship music scene, Reese Germany’s songs bring encouragement to those who are hurting.
Her lyrics and songs give life to powerful testimony about finding hope through suffering.
“I feel like my life is a song,” Reese said. “I feel like God has written a story that only he could write.”
Born with a grapefruit-sized cyst on her left kidney, Reese was in and out of hospitals for much of her childhood.
Then at age 10, a life-threatening situation sent her to the ICU at Children’s Hospital in Dallas with an eventual diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.
“God saved me. I shouldn’t have made it out of that hospital. Doctors prepared my parents for goodbyes.”
In the face of fear, the Germanys turned to their faith.
Marla, who spent hours on her knees in her closet praying for Reese during pregnancy, was again praying for intervention.
“I just had to trust that God was going to do mighty things through this child’s life,” Marla said.
Years later, Reese says that would become abundantly clear. In high school, she uncovered a purpose for the pain she had endured.
“I felt this stirring in my heart, like I’ve never felt in my life,” Reese said. “I knew this was something God was calling me to. I started having dreams in my sleep.”
Her parents supported a desire to explore her singing voice through coaching sessions.
“This is an anointing on your life. You can’t train this. You can’t teach this,” Marla said. “People ask me where did she get this voice? And I’m like, um, God. There’s no other way to describe it.”
Building confidence, she later auditioned for the worship team at Dallas Baptist University, responding to a call to serve.
Reese has written more than 70 songs and is traveling the country, using her music to encourage and inspire. She was even selected for a music residency in Nashville.
“Being able to be inspired by scripture and write words that hold so much power has impacted the way that i write music.”
Her gifts have caught the attention of some the biggest names in contemporary worship music, performing with Grammy Award-winner Chris Tomlin and groups like Shane and Shane.
As her ministry blossoms, the Germany family is again faced with a test of faith.
Marla has been battling stage four Colo-rectal cancer for 18 months.
“I choose joy every day. And every day I wake up. I look at that beautiful sunrise and I thank God for another day.”
The mother of three has endured 4 surgeries, 28 rounds of radiation, and 21 rounds of chemo. But the greatest therapy, she says, is the joys of motherhood.
She takes great pride in each of her daughters’ successes. Reese’s music is a reminder of all they’ve overcome.
“It rings in my ears. Like, I wake up in the night and I am hearing these songs over and over. It washes peace over me.”
For Reese, life has come full circle in praying for her mother’s serious health battle.
“I wouldn’t be the the person that I am today if it weren’t for the example of how to suffer well. But also how to suffer for the Lord in a mighty way, the way my mama has done.”
Faith is their bond — calling this a journey from suffering to surrender.
Reese Germany will perform at Love Thy City in Tyler on July 19.
Her music is also available on Spotify.
