Springtime in Texas is a sight to see in parts of the Lone Star State. It’s when wildflowers of all colors seem to paint vast fields and pastures in the central and eastern parts of the state.
The world-famous Texas bluebonnet was adopted as the official state flower in 1901 during the 27th Texas Legislature.
“Although early explorers failed to mention the bluebonnet in their descriptions of Texas, Indian lore called the flower a gift from the Great Spirit,” according to the Texas Historical Association.
The agency says the highway department started extending the flower’s range by planting bluebonnets along Texas roadways back in the 1930s.
Not all bluebonnets are blue, however. There are variations that produce maroon, purple, white, and pink shades.
April and May are a great time to spot wildflowers on a drive through Texas!
