This weekend I had the great pleasure of attending a performance by Doc Severinsen, the longtime bandleader of NBC’s Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
The East Texas Symphony Orchestra brought him to Caldwell Auditorium for a concert with his band, The San Miguel Five. They were phenomenal! As a fellow trumpeter, hearing his high notes in person was a long-time goal fulfilled. The wails from his trumpet were as loud as his iconic wardrobe.
According to his website, the Grammy Award-winner has made more than 30 albums -– from big band to jazz-fusion to classical.
After welcoming him to East Texas, Doc shared a few of his interesting ties to the area. Doc’s daughter attended Kilgore College. Also, San Miguel, where his group got its start, is a sister city of Tyler.
